Salute To Former Chief Justice Burley Mitchell

Justice Burley Mitchell retired as the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1999 to head Womble Carlyle’s appellate advocacy and government relations groups. As a judge, he authored 484 appellate and Supreme Court decisions including the landmark Leandro v. State of North Carolina case regarding educational opportunities for all North Carolina children.
He received his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and his J.D. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is married to the former Mary Lou Willett of Raleigh. In 2007, Mitchell received the North Carolina Award for public service, the state’s highest civilian honor.
Born in Oxford, NC, Mitchell is a Navy Veteran who served four years in the 7th Fleet, Asia. He became a member of the Advisory Board of the Veterans Leadership Council, now the Veterans Life Center, in 2011 — an appointment that required little more than allowing the use of his good name. But with his customary hard-working nature and indefatigable gusto, he has written letters, attended critical meetings and given both speeches and good advice on behalf of the VLC. He has truly made a difference for all at-risk North Carolina Veterans.
