Raleigh Event Raises Money For New Housing For Homeless Veterans

By The Raleigh Telegram

RALEIGH – Governor Patrick McCrory, was sworn-in Saturday as governor, ended his first day on the job with veterans at “A Salute to North Carolina Veterans” at the Hilton hotel in North Raleigh.

The fundraiser was the first of its kind for the Veterans Leadership Council of North Carolina – Cares, a veteran owned and operated 501 (c)3 non-profit corporation, founded to provide care and assistance to homeless NC vets.

In his address the governor told a sold-out crowd of over 400-plus, “I hope to have veterans be a part of the economic recovery of our state. These soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan…who can be more qualified than them?”

North Carolina Cares Co-founder John Turner, a retired Army Captain and veteran of the Iraq war also spoke to the crowd.

“We are honored and humbled that Governor McCrory chose our event as his first public event as governor,” he said. ” His emphasis on our State’s economic recovery and his vision of using veterans as a part of the solution, underlines his commitment to our cause.”

The event garnered over $200,000 from local businesses and patrons. The money will be used to renovate the Veterans Life Center located on the John Umstead hospital Complex in Butner, North Carolina. When completed, the center will provide housing and rehabilitation services for upwards of 150 homeless veterans.
